Project: Seawater Desalination Plant, SAKO, 200,000 m3/day
Client: Asia Water Development Engineering Company
Background: Due to water scarcity in Iran’s Central Plateau, three major Iranian mining industries formed joint stock companies to develop large-scale desalination plants on the Persian Gulf coast. The desalinated water will be transferred over long distances to industrial complexes in Kerman and Yazd provinces, while also supplying part of Bandar Abbas’s drinking water.
Actions: Planned as the largest plant in Iran and one of the largest worldwide, the project involved collaboration between Singaporean technology provider Hyflux, Iranian contractor Kayson, and MEWE. Hyflux completed the basic design, while MEWE carried out detailed design and construction supervision.
Results: The first phase covered pretreatment, reverse osmosis (RO), and post-treatment facilities for one-fifth of the final 1 MCM/day capacity. MEWE also designed the seawater intake and brine discharge system for the full final capacity. The project will be executed in multiple phases.
