Project: Seawater Desalination Plant, B.A., 100000 m3/day
Client: Hormozgan Urban Water and Wastewater Authority
Background: The Hormozgan Water and Wastewater Authority issued an invitation to bid for the construction and operation of a 100,000 m³/day seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination plant to supply drinking water to Bandar Abbas, the capital of Hormozgan Province, under a BOOT contract. The proposed site was located on the far eastern outskirts of the city.
Actions: Omran Mokran, an investment company specializing in the water sector, participated as a bidder and awarded the project’s conceptual design to a consortium of OTV and MEWE. A pre-feasibility study prepared by the Hormozgan Water and Wastewater Authority was reviewed and revalidated during the conceptual design stage.
Results: Detailed investigations of the proposed intake system—originally developed at the pre-tender stage—revealed that the region’s very mild shoreline slope would not allow for a cost-effective intake design. The option of using beach wells was also found to be impractical. As a result, the project design was completed only to the conceptual stage, after which further development was halted.
