Project: Pilgrims Guest House Complex for Karbala Holy Shrine
Client: Reconstruction Organization of Holy Shrines in Iraq
Background: Karbala, a city built around the holy shrine of Imam Hussein, has undergone numerous renovations over the centuries. The most recent major renovation began in the early 2000s and included the construction of a Multipurpose Pilgrims Complex. MEWE was appointed to provide engineering design and construction supervision for this significant project.
Actions: Given the cultural and religious importance of Karbala, combined with the considerable challenges in sourcing construction materials, the design phase was highly detailed and meticulous. Many materials had to be transported from distant locations, with some imported from Iran. Construction personnel were recruited both locally and from neighboring countries.
Results: The four-story complex has a total floor area of 13,000 m². The third floor features 40 luxury guest rooms, while the second floor accommodates 30 classrooms, a meeting hall, and a computer center. The first floor houses a restaurant capable of serving 1,300 guests, and the basement level includes a polyclinic equipped for urgent medical treatments.
