Project: Review of Lessons Learned in Seawater Intake projects
Client: Asia Water Development Company
Background: With an investment of over 4.8 MCM/day in seawater intake facilities, Asia Water commissioned MEWE to conduct a dedicated study—running in parallel with the Intake Design Study performed by another consultant—to collect, review, and analyze lessons learned from comparable national and international projects.
Actions: The approach combined multiple methods, including internet-based research, site visits to similar installations in Iran and abroad, technical meetings with subject-matter experts, and the collection of technical reports. The documents and references gathered during the study formed a comprehensive data bank for use throughout the construction and operation phases.
Results: Key topics investigated included the use of less corrosive reinforcement materials in concrete, strategies for preventing pump cavitation, the impact of basin debris on pump vibration, operational requirements for standby and batch modes, environmental considerations for intake chambers, and the operation of shared intake basins serving both seawater desalination plants and thermal power stations.
