Project: Groundwater Modeling of KhatoonAbad Plain
Client: National Iranian Copper Industries Company
Background: The Khatoonabad Plains aquifer is the main raw water source for the Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex, though most of its extraction is for agriculture. Agricultural withdrawals are increasing, causing continuous groundwater table decline.
Actions: Given the importance of the resource, MEWE engaged Gartner Lee (Canada) for higher-level supervision. The study included four phases: literature review, data gathering, conceptual modeling, and detailed numerical modeling. Field visits were conducted to ensure reliable model inputs.
Results: The study clearly defined aquifer boundaries and characteristics, as well as interactions with neighboring plains. Spatial and temporal forecasts for water quality and quantity were provided. Results indicated that if current withdrawal rates are maintained, Sarcheshmeh can rely on this aquifer long term.
